Humanitarian Relief and Development work
Läkarmissionen is active in partnerships and own implemented work in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe. We currently operate in approximately 25 countries through collaboration with local organisations and via our own country offices in Chad, Djibouti, Dubai, Ethiopia,Niger, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.
We are committed to work in many vulnerable areas where aid is difficult to access. Our ambition is to reach those living in remote areas. These operations are to a large extent carried out by our country offices. In disaster situations, Läkarmissionen can also in collaboration with partner organisations, take action in parts of the world other than in our regular partner countries.
Our main target groups are women and children. In humanitarian interventions, the most vulnerable individuals are our priority target group.
Our Code of Conduct is the guiding principle for all work carried out by the entire organisation.
In the human rights-based approach, it is important that no individual is discriminated against, regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, functional impairment or any other reason. In several countries, our commitment is to enabling individuals with functional impairments to attend school. Läkarmissionen does this, inter alia, by educating teachers, developing methods and materials, and contributing to the adaptation of schools so that everyone has the opportunity to participate in tuition.
It is also essential that rights holders are heard. In our work we endeavour to involve the rights holders in every phase of an aid project, i.e. the planning, implementation, follow-up and evaluation. Interviews are frequently conducted prior to an intervention in order to understand the needs that exist and how these can best be met.
All work invested must lead to the legal and moral duty bearers at different levels of society taking responsibility. Läkarmissionen and our partners work to create forms of dialogue as well as to enhance the knowledge and understanding of the duty bearers.
In many of the countries where Läkarmissionen operates, corruption is a threat to development. Openness and transparency are therefore of utmost importance at every level in our work.
Humanitarian-Development-Peace nexus
Läkarmissionen has lengthy experience of working with both humanitarian and development assistance. Through the merger with International Aid Services (IAS) the scope of activities was expanded to include extensive humanitarian aid work in Africa, primarily through water, sanitation and hygiene projects. As a result of this and in addition to our close and long-term cooperation with partner organisations, we are able to act quickly in times of crisis and disaster.
There is today a consensus about the need of better integration and improved coordination between humanitarian relief and development programming to ensure best possible impact. Through our presence in crisis areas we have a preparedness not only to save lives but also to include components to strengthen resilience for possible future dire situations. In this we also include peace-building activities and projects crossing over to more long-term development work.
Our development work is characterised by a long-term vision to strengthen civil society. Endurance and joint efforts are key factors in our development work as well as humanitarian assistance. We also see relationships with partner organisations as a platform for mutual learning. Safeguarding relationships with local stakeholders, such as authorities and civil society actors, are important parts of our work.
The basis for all our development programmes is to fight poverty, empower and equip people with the tools to build a sustainable future. In practise, we want to transform societies and support people living in fragile contexts to restore their dignity as well as their ability to impact their own lives.
